I began my pottery career at the Leach Pottery in St Ives in 2014, joining as the first recipient of the Leach Seasalt Bursary. I went on to complete a three-year production pottery apprenticeship, developing a strong foundation in all areas of running a production studio.

Early on, I found myself drawn to wood-fired pottery: the uniqueness of each piece, and the way fire, ash and embers interact with the clay, each one telling its own story. As this was an area I couldn't explore at the Leach, I took a year away in 2018-19 to study the process. I spent three months in Bizen, Japan, studying with potter Kazuya Ishida, followed by seven months as the Young Wood Fire Artist in Residence at Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center in Denmark. These experiences deepened my interest in wood firing and gave me the chance to take part in many firings across a wide range of kiln styles.

I then returned to the Leach, working there as a production potter until 2022, before moving to New Zealand to join Driving Creek on the Coromandel Peninsula. Driving Creek's history, its community of artists and its connection to wood firing have given me a new environment in which to develop my work. Alongside my own pottery, I'm involved in production, teaching, workshops, exhibitions and the development of the arts programme there.

My own work focuses mainly on making useful, everyday pots, though I occasionally turn to sculptural work as well. I enjoy the repetition and discipline of production throwing, while letting each piece keep the subtle variations that come from being made by hand. While wood firing remains central to my thinking, much of my everyday work is fired in gas kilns.
